A short history of the detective novel

A short history of the detective novel

The detective novel is a popular type of story. It usually has a crime, a detective, and a mystery to solve.

The Beginning

The first detective novels appeared in the 1800s. Edgar Allan Poe wrote "The Murders in the Rue Morgue" in 1841. It is considered the first modern detective story. Later, Arthur Conan Doyle created the famous detective Sherlock Holmes. Holmes used logic and science to solve crimes.

The Golden Age

Between the 1920s and 1940s, the detective novel became very popular. This was the "Golden Age." Agatha Christie was the queen of this time. She created Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple. Her stories often had a murder in a closed place, like a country house, and a surprising ending.

Modern Times

Today, detective novels are still very popular. Now, we have many different types. One very popular modern writer is Richard Osman. He writes "The Thursday Murder Club" series. The story is about a group of elderly friends living in a retirement village who solve old crimes. The books are funny, warm, and clever. They show that you don't need to be a police officer to be a good detective.

Logic problem: The colored houses

Four friends live in four houses next to each other. Each house is a different color: blue, green, red, and yellow. Can you find out who lives where?

→ Sarah does not live in the blue or green house.

→ The red house is immediately to the right of the green house.

→ Paul lives in the first house.

→ Maria does not live next to John.
