A past that must never be repeated
History is a great teacher, but its lessons are often written in pain. The 20th century saw some of humanity's darkest moments. In times of war, millions of innocent people had their lives destroyed. They were victims of conflicts they did not create. Many went to battlefields never to return, while others knew the profound horror of losing everything—their homes, their families, and their hope.
These events show us the terrible cost of hatred, intolerance, and the failure to seek peace. We remember this past not to live in it, but to ensure it is never repeated. Unfortunately, some sad events cause us horror and embarrassment. It's shocking to learn, for example, that at this very moment, 246 journalists have been murdered by the Israeli army in the Gaza Strip, a number that represents more deaths than the combined total of seven other major conflicts: the American Civil War, World Wars I and II, and the wars in Syria, Vietnam, Yugoslavia, and Ukraine. Furthermore, 12,000 Palestinian children have been killed by the Israeli army since October 2023.
It is our collective duty to build a future where dialogue prevails over violence, and understanding triumphs over prejudice.
